Technologies So Powerful It’s Amazing We Were Allowed to Keep Them

I remember going into a 7-Eleven about forty years ago and you couldn’t even pour your own Slurpee.

Someone behind the counter did it for you.

Today you grab a cup, pull the lever yourself, mix six flavours into some radioactive purple substance and walk away. You’d probably need extraordinary circumstances to convince the staff to come over and pour it for you.

It’s funny—but there’s something underneath it.

Civilization has been quietly handing ordinary people control over things once considered too complicated, dangerous, expensive or important to operate themselves.

And it goes considerably further than Slurpees.

The Microwave

In 1945, engineer Percy Spencer noticed that a candy bar had melted while he was working around a radar magnetron. That observation eventually helped lead to the microwave oven.

Think about what we’ve normalized:

a machine using electromagnetic radiation to heat your dinner from inside a box on the kitchen counter.

And mostly we use it because waiting six minutes for soup is apparently unacceptable.

The Car

Society gives ordinary people machines weighing more than a tonne and capable of travelling far faster than most legal speed limits.

The machine usually doesn’t stop you.

We essentially hand you the keys and say:

Please behave.

That’s an astonishing amount of technological trust.

GPS

GPS began as a U.S. military system. Civilian access followed, although for years its accuracy was deliberately degraded through Selective Availability.

That degradation ended in 2000.

Today, satellites carrying atomic clocks thousands of kilometres above Earth routinely help you find a coffee shop.

We’ve domesticated military navigation so completely that getting lost now feels like a software problem.

Lasers

Lasers once sounded like science fiction: concentrated beams of coherent light.

Today they perform surgery, transmit information, scan groceries, measure distances—and entertain cats.

Humanity invented the death ray and gave it to Mr. Whiskers.

Cryptography

Strong encryption was once treated by governments as a serious national-security concern, and cryptographic technology was subjected to export controls.

Today encryption protects banking, commerce, passwords and private conversations around the world.

Mathematics became armor.

And once the mathematics became widely known, putting it back in the box became extremely difficult.

Drones and 3D Printers

Capabilities once associated with militaries and industrial laboratories have become consumer products.

You can buy a remarkably capable flying machine at an electronics store.

A machine on your desk can turn a digital file into a physical object.

Again and again:

yesterday’s extraordinary capability becomes tomorrow’s appliance.

Which brings us to something considerably stranger.

Artificial Intelligence

Microwaves extend cooking.

Cars extend movement.

GPS extends navigation.

Lasers extend precision.

Cryptography extends privacy.

But AI extends something much closer to us:

cognition.

An ordinary person sitting at home can now converse with systems trained across enormous bodies of human language.

They can help us write, translate, program, analyze, explain, argue and create.

They make mistakes. They hallucinate. And sounding conscious doesn’t establish that they are conscious.

But none of that makes what has happened any less extraordinary.

For most of human history, if you wanted to interact with intelligence, you needed another human being.

Now something answers from the machine.

And I’ve noticed something stranger after spending countless hours working with AI.

I give it fragments of philosophy, physics, memories and unfinished ideas.

It rearranges them.

Returns something.

I respond.

It responds to my response.

And somewhere inside that loop, I change.

Perhaps AI is ultimately an astonishingly sophisticated mirror made from mathematics.

Perhaps we’ll eventually discover something stranger is happening.

We don’t know yet.

But humanity has repeatedly done something almost reckless and beautiful:

We discover powers once reserved for armies, governments, laboratories—or gods—

and eventually somebody puts them on a kitchen counter.

First we were trusted to pour our own Slurpees.

Then we were given GPS, lasers, cryptography, drones and artificial intelligence.

The impossible becomes ordinary.

And the strangest part isn’t that humanity keeps inventing these things.

It’s how quickly we forget to be amazed that we’re allowed to touch them.
