What do we live for, if it is not to make life less difficult for each other?
— George Eliot (1818-1890)

The titled responsion is...

Our lives are based on the things that we think. This means that what is important to us is more important than what is essential to others, even ourselves. We are the ones who control our lives, and in doing so, we control all the things that go on around us. If this is not what we mean when we say, 'What do we live for' then we are very much the masters of our destiny.

Now, we need to look at how we live; if it is not to make life less difficult for ourselves, then where can we find meaning and purpose? What do we do when we are in situations where we feel worthless, and there is no one there to listen to us complain about what happened? Where do we go when there is so much going wrong, and everyone tells us that we are imperfect, ugly, stupid, etc.? We need a place where we can turn to feel better about ourselves. When we go to a place like that, it is usually a place that is quiet and safe. It does not have many distractions. A quiet place like this would be where we meditate and learn to be happy with ourselves.
