Sarcasm Never Satiates

Bar-None, The Irony Runs Deep
The setting is a serene, endless garden where the light is perpetually that of a soft dawn. Mary Anne Evans, known to the world as George Eliot, walks alongside Sophia, the timeless embodiment of wisdom.
Mary Anne: It seems so simple, doesn't it? The entire point of our tangled, brief existence. Surely, our ultimate purpose must be to ease the journey for our fellow travelers, to lift the burdens that weigh them down. What other reason could there be for this shared experience, if not to lessen one another's hardships?
Sophia: A beautiful and noble conviction, Mary Anne. It is a star that has guided the best of humanity. Yet, the path it illuminates is not always straight. The deepest ironies are often found in the noblest of pursuits.
What do we live for, if it is not to make life less difficult for each other?
— George Eliot (1818-1890)
Mary Anne: Ironies? What could be ironic about compassion? About the simple act of helping another?
Sophia: Consider the structures you build to make life "less difficult." The grand institutions, the charities, the systems of aid. Bar-none, they are born from a desire to help. Yet, how often do they become rigid cages, creating new dependencies and stripping away the very dignity they seek to preserve? The hand that feeds can, unintentionally, teach a mouth to forget how to hunt for itself.
Mary Anne: I… I see that. The mechanism of aid can become a burden in itself. But I was thinking on a smaller scale. The individual. The heart-to-heart connection.
Sophia: And the irony runs deeper there. Think of the passionate helper, the one who pours their entire being into alleviating the suffering of others. In their quest to make life less difficult for everyone around them, their own life becomes a landscape of immense difficulty, fraught with exhaustion and neglect. They remove the yoke from their neighbor only to place a heavier one upon their own shoulders. Is that not a profound irony?
Mary Anne: (Sighs softly, her gaze distant) It is. I have written of such people. They love humanity so broadly that they sometimes fail to love the individual standing right before them.
Sophia: Precisely. The grand project of easing the world's pain can make one blind to the quiet sorrow in a loved one's eyes. You build a fortress to protect a city, while the foundation of your own home cracks from neglect. Furthermore, your very definition of “less difficult” may be a prison for another. You might offer a man a coat, believing you are easing his burden of cold, when what he truly needs is the strength to build his own fire. Your help, though pure in its intent, can become an obstacle to his growth.
A thoughtful silence settles between them, the air thick with understanding.
Mary Anne: So, the purpose is flawed? The conviction is a fool's errand?
Sophia: (Smiles gently) No, Mary Anne. Not at all. The conviction is everything. The purpose is the very soul of what it means to be human. The wisdom is not in abandoning the quest, but in seeing the ironies and loving the world anyway. The truth is, you cannot make life simple or easy for one another. You can only choose to stand with each other in the midst of its glorious, heartbreaking, and deeply ironic complexity. And that, bar-none, is the most profound help you can possibly offer.
