Feminist Much? Why so Angry??
Sophia: Sylvia, your words scorch the page. “Out of the ash I rise with my red hair…” There is fury here, yet also freedom. Is anger the only path to being seen?
Plath: Anger, Sophia, is the breath of the caged. Women are told to whisper, to fold ourselves into wallpaper, to smile while our edges bleed. Sometimes, to rise, one must burn.
Herr God, Herr Lucifer, Beware. Beware. Out of the ash I rise with my red hair And I eat men like air.
— Sylvia Plath (1932-1963)
Sophia: But is it rage or revelation that you seek? The line between destruction and creation is so thin.
Plath: Both. Herr God, Herr Lucifer—I have learned to court them both, for neither is without power. I eat men like air, yes—but it is the air of centuries I inhale. It is reclamation.
Sophia: Feminist, you are called. “Why so angry?” they ask. As if our indignation must be polite, trimmed, and silent.
Plath: Polite anger is denial. They do not understand that the fire in a woman is not a threat—it is an unveiling. Crazy, they say. Perhaps. But better a raging truth than a quiet lie.
Sophia: Out of the ash, then. What is it like, to rise in such a way?
Plath: To rise is to become both phoenix and storm. It is to carry your pain like armor, your voice like weapon, your desire like flame. And to know that you can never again be small.
Sophia: Then the anger is not just anger. It is survival, transformation, and assertion.
Plath: Precisely. We are wild and whole, Sophia. Uncontained, unapologetic, unbroken. Out of the ash, we rise. And we consume the air itself, if that is what it takes to breathe freely.
Sophia: Then let us rise, even if the world fears our fire.
Plath: Let it fear. Fear is its own kind of respect.
