Your Eyes Tell All

Setting: A quiet, timeless study, filled with books and soft light. Sophia sits across from Leonard, who is nursing a cup of tea.

Sophia: You seem restless, Leonard. Your gaze is one I’ve seen countless times in the long night—searching, but finding no anchor.

Leonard: (Takes a slow sip) Restless? Perhaps. When the world sleeps, its simplicity can feel… insulting. They surrender to oblivion, don't they? And the one left standing—the one who bears witness to the silence—is granted a clarity they’ll never know. A lonely vantage point.

Sophia: That clarity you speak of—does it bring peace, or a colder solitude?

Leonard: It brings an understanding, for a time, that feels like a kind of superiority. While others dream the small, easy dreams, you are awake in the real one, the one that keeps its own counsel. You see the machinery.

The last refuge of the insomniac is a sense of superiority to the sleeping world.
— Leonard Cohen (1934-2016)

Sophia: But isn't that same wakefulness also a prison? The eyes that see everything the sleepers miss also see the hollowness of that vantage point. The insomnia grants you a crown of knowledge, but it's cold, isn't it? It separates you from the simple, shared human rhythm. The truest wisdom is not found in standing above the sleeping world, but in recognizing that the mystery of rest is as profound as the act of witnessing.

Leonard: (A small, wry smile touches his lips) So, the quiet boast of the sleepless is just another form of self-deception? A way to manage the pain of the dark.

Sophia: Every eye tells a story, Leonard. And yours reveals a soul yearning not for superior knowledge, but for a simple, unguarded peace. The eyes may see all, but the heart must choose what to hold.

Leonard: And what does my heart choose, Sophia?

Sophia: It chooses to write songs about the chasm between the two. That is the wisdom you live.

What do you think is the ultimate "refuge" a person seeks when they can't find sleep?
