Scientists Reveal the Shape of a Single Photon for the First Time Ever in 2024

Imagine a traveler who embarks on a journey but experiences NO time between departure and arrival. This is the life—or rather, the timeless existence—of a photon. When a photon is ejected from an electron, it zips through the universe at the speed of light, only to be absorbed moments later. For us, this journey can span billions of years, but for the photon, time simply doesn’t tick. It’s as if the universe has granted it a special pass to skip the queue of temporal events.

A photon is emitted and absorbed in what appears to be the same instant, experiencing no time due to traveling at light speed. The photon doesn’t age, doesn’t pause, and doesn’t experience any interlude between its points of origin and destination. It’s the ultimate time traveler, albeit with no memory of the journey.

To truly appreciate the magical nature of photons, we must delve into one of the most astounding experiments in the history of science: Thomas Young’s double-slit experiment. Conducted in the early 19th century, this experiment set the stage for a revolution in our understanding of light and quantum mechanics.

Picture this: a beam of light is directed at a barrier with two slits. On the other side of the barrier, a screen waits to catch the photons. Logic would suggest that photons passing through the slits should create two distinct lines on the screen.
